My main practice is candid street photography however I took a grabbed shot on my phone at a London Art Fair; the image was at the back of my mind for months as part of a potential project on Art Spectators. One day I zoomed in on the photo to find the artists name- Nick Bashall and googled and found the gallery that represented him. I asked if they knew where the painting was now located and they invited me to their St James Gallery, London to see it.
I took some reference shots of the gallery and painting. I then dropped a photo of the painting into the gallery window in Photoshop and sent it to them with a cheeky request to let me re-enact the scene. When I got a positive reply I asked if by any chance Nick Bashall would be willing to participate.
I visited again for more test shots and realised it would not work in daylight because of the reflections of modern buildings. This limited a shoot to the blue hour/dusk and availability of artist and models plus my imminent departure to Costa Rica for a month. In the end after months of planning I only had a 25-minute window for the shoot. I normally work on my own as a photographer, but on this occasionI I put together a small team to ensure that we could deliver what I was looking for. On the day of the shoot the original artist models thoughtfully dressed in the same clothes and Nick kindly plied us with coffees and doughnuts whilst we set up. As this was not a candid photo I used Photoshop to remove an ugly burglar alarm and add a painting on the rear wall which had been in the original painting. Finally, I decided to use the picture frame of the painting as the frame for the whole photo.
